Plethodontidae - Lungless Salamanders

                    There are around 375 species in this family of small salamanders. They range in size from one inch to a foot in length and have four toes on their front legs.  
                   The species in this family have no lungs. They breathe through their moist skin. Some species have slender bodies and other are stocky. 
                   Most species are  found   
      
       in 
      
       the northeastern U.S., on the west coast of North America, or in Central America. There are some species found in South America and southern Europe. Some species live on land and others live in the water. There are even some species in this family that climb in trees! Most species lay their eggs on land.
